New Boston

Residents to vote on center

By Ryan O'Connor
Staff Writer

The warrant article to create a capital reserve fund for a new community center in New Boston was one of the main topics discussed at the deliberative session of Town Meeting and will be revisted by voters on Election Day, Tuesday, March 14.

Chairman of the recreational committee, Lee Brown, said the need for a multi-use community center is growing rapidly as the town’s population increases.

Brown said the committee tries to offer numerous senior citizen programs, including movie night and a weekly lunch, as well as after-school, weekend and summer youth programs, which include up to 60 kids.

Brown admitted thus far the town is getting by using space provided by New Boston Central School, but said the town has already begun outgrowing the current facilities.

“That is very generous of (the school), but as the community is growing, that building is constantly booked,” said Brown. “We have a (a number) of issues so it would be nice to be able to have a larger place.”

The community center, according to Brown, was a very important task to the committee, and to help organize the project, other town committees such as the school board and board of selectmen, were brought into the fold as well.

“We couldn’t handle something of that magnitude by ourselves,” said Brown. “We’re trying to go slowly, thinking about what the town needs and bringing in multiple departments.”

“The school board and us went back and forth and we finally came up with an idea they liked,” Brown said.

The idea, Brown said, is to have the financing for the facility split three ways between recreational program fees, taxes from the town and financing from the school for classroom use, which could be funded by state aid.

“No design really has been finalized, but we are starting to put money aside,” said Brown. “The town fathers and the finance committee feel the plan is so strong that it is a good time to put forth this idea to a (capital reserve fund) and get this idea rolling so we can maybe get it done six years down the road.”
