GOFFSTOWN
Sinkholes, red tape
Rain continues to make life difficult By Rod Hansen Road repairs less than three weeks old were destroyed in a torrent of water during Goffstown’s most recent bout of heavy rains. “I understand some of the work your crew did was completely obliterated,” Selectmen Chairman Barbara Griffin said to Carl Quiram, referring to repairs the Department of Public Works crews had made to Wallace Road that was were washed out anew following the heavy rains that began on June 1. Goffstown and New Boston both saw some of the roads that had just been repaired from the May floods collapse again under heavy rains. However, all those roads have been repaired again, and no major injuries were reported from the rain. Goffstown experienced significant inconvenience due to the rains, said Quiram. The town saw road closures on Wallace and Mountain Base roads, with both losing sections during the night’s heavy rain, Quiram said. Mountain Road also had a section undermined, and Normand Road experienced damage along some of shoulders, he said. Goffstown also suffered a power failure, Police Chief Michael French said. The section of Route 114 which has the police department, the women’s prison, the Hillsborough County Nursing Home and the Villa Augustina School lost power when trees came down on some nearby power lines on Thursday, June 1, said French. Police recommended schools be closed the following day, and Superintendent of Schools Darrell Lockwood agreed to the closure, French said. New Boston experienced its most notable effect of the storm when a Public Works truck was passing over a culvert and the roadway collapsed, sending the truck into a sinkhole on Tucker Mill south of Saunders Hill Road. Public Works employee Ron Vasha was not injured in the incident, said Police Sgt. Frank Kochanek. Two tow trucks were sent to retrieve the Public Works truck following the Friday morning incident, Kochanek said. Roads experiencing damage or closure in the rainfall included Tucker Mill Road, Christie Road, Route 77 at the junction of Twin Bridge, Riverdale Road and Bedford Road.
