Fix up Moore School

By Joe Cox
Staff Writer

The Henry W. Moore School will be renovated as part of the Candia School Board's goal to make the school district educationally and financially sound.

"A new school would be extremely expensive," said board member Dave Fisher, chairman of the facilities committee.

The panel had been working on options since May and the board made its decision to go with a renovation of the Moore School as the best choice at the Nov. 3 board meeting.

"How much of a renovation is yet to be determined," Fisher said.

The committee had explored the possibility of creating a cooperative, but no other towns were willing to go that route.

The board had established four goals for the last two years at the Moore School. One was to add a gymnasium, the second was to come up with more space for special education, and the third was an effort to reclaim media center space.

“It was the largest space available and when they needed more space, they just kept carving out another corner,” Fisher said.

The fourth goal set by the board was to move the kindergarten to a more age-appropriate and suitable location. The kindergarten is presently located in the middle school wing. The school serves grades K-8.

Now the committee will come up with at least two options for the Moore School renovation and present a final plan of action at the January board meeting.

The committee will provide an update at the December meeting of the school board.

Fisher was relieved that there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

“Our committee has done so much work,” he said. “One of our unstated goals was to leave no stone unturned.”

Fisher welcomes volunteers to assist with the remaining work of the committee. Contact him at 483-2136.
